More than half of the population - 2.8 million out of a total of 4.9 million - relies on humanitarian assistance and around 17 million are in a situation of extreme need.
In this context of crisis, COOPI protects the most vulnerable: internally displaced persons (IDPs), survivors of gender-based violence, communities affected by persecution and harassment by armed groups.
COOPI continues to promote food security, distributing food and seeds and training farmers and breeders in enhanced production techniques, in a vision of community-based rural development. It builds schools and strengthens the capacities of teachers and local authorities through training and awareness-raising. It provides psychosocial support to survivors of violence, carrying out protection monitoring, social cohesion and management activities in several refugee and IDP sites within the country.
COOPI has been working in the Central African Republic since 1974 and has never left the country during this time. Today it is present in 12 out of 16 prefectures: Bangui, Ombella M'Poko, Lobaye, Nana-Mambere, Ouham-Pende, Ouham, Kemo, Haute Kotto, Basse Kotto, Mbomou, Haut Mbomou and Ouaka.
