Jordan. Valuable help for young Ahmed

Thanks to the project "Ma'akom: Economic support to the most vulnerable families in Zarqa Governorate to cover their essential needs" funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), COOPI - Cooperazione Internazionale was able to concretely help Aysha and her family, especially Ahmed. The goal of this project is to improve and contribute to social protection and poverty alleviation for 68 vulnerable families affected by the Syrian crisis and the economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic in Jordan.

Aysha is a refugee, from the city of Homs in Syria, who now lives in Zarqa governorate, 40 km from Amman, with her family of five: her husband and children, two boys and one girl. She had to leave Syria in 2012 because of the war. The family received assistance with a cash transfer to help her eldest son who, due to an accident, suffers from cerebellar atrophy, which causes him imbalances and difficulties in walking and using movement in his right foot.

Aysha tells:

Once we arrived in Jordan, the biggest challenges were adjusting to a new place and a new life and, financially, the high cost of living.  Also, we had difficulties with the health of one of my children, Ahmed, my oldest son.

Aysha continues to explain:

He had an accident at school where he fell and hit his head. This caused brain problems and involved his walking, as well as affecting his daily life, also due to bullying from his peers, in the neighborhood and sometimes from some relatives.

The family, given the precarious financial situation, could not financially support Ahmed for school, but especially for medical visits and treatment. Thanks to the cash transfer and COOPI's project with support from AICS, Aysha was able to cover her son's schooling needs and was able to have the necessary initial medical examinations and then access physiotherapy sessions.

Aysha and her family thank COOPI, the project leaders and AICS because they helped them meet their needs and supported the family and their son to overcome challenges and needs they were unable to meet before.
