Libya. Completed works to support the Water Management and Maintenance Department in Tripoli Centre

Within the framework of the project "Social Dialogue for the Environment", funded by the Italian Development Cooperation Agency (AICS) and in collaboration with the Italian NGO CEFA, COOPI – Cooperazione Internazionale - completed the rehabilitation works of the administrative and technical office premises of the Department of Water and Sanitation Management and Maintenance in Tripoli Center, which were destroyed during the civil war.

The works, which began in June 2023, after a broader evaluation study divided into different fields and phases, will allow to improve the working conditions of the technicians and administrators responsible for the public service of supply, assistance and control of the water service. The direct beneficiaries are therefore the officials who work there, the approximately 47.000 citizens residing in the Municipality of Tripoli Center, and the internally displaced persons.

For a more efficient execution, public authorities have been mobilized to enable operations to be carried out safely and thus direct traffic. Difficulties arose from the need to remove the rubble and carry out the work in one of the busiest areas of the city of Tripoli. The demolition for rehabilitation was carried out by both skilled and unskilled manpower, without the use of heavy vehicles. The rehabilitation will enable the Municipality of Tripoli Center to improve a quality water management service in the identified neighborhoods and activate an emergency service for the citizens who will be housed in the new infrastructure. The offices were officially inaugurated by the Municipality in August.

The "Social Dialogue for Environment" project aims to improve the living conditions of the local population in four areas of the country: the Municipalities of Tripoli, Al Awinat, Gatroun and Brak Alshati. About 73,000 beneficiaries have been identified for the project, and the activities will provide access to enhanced sanitation and environmental services, improving the delivery and quality of services provided and ensuring that Libyan municipalities have the necessary assistance and resources to optimize the technical and administrative management of basic services.
