Mauritania. Rehabilitation of the Messeytaleb Dam: an essential infrastructure for the region

On December 11, 2023, the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Mauritania and the representative of the Ministry of Cooperation of the German government visited the PRODEVELOP program "Promoting Local Economic Development and Peace through an inclusive strategy to support the livestock and agricultural sectors in Mauritania, Wilaya de Hodh El Chargui", funded by the G5 Sahel Facility Foundation and implemented by COOPI - International Cooperation.

The purpose of the visit was to get acquainted with the activities of the PRODEVELOP program, which strives to increase local communities' access to economic and social infrastructure and make them aware of the processes needed to ensure peace promotion and sustainable management of productive investments in 5 "Moughataas" (departments) of Mauritania.

The Messeytaleb Dam is an essential infrastructure for the region. It allows rainwater to be stored and used for irrigating crops and watering livestock, improving access to water and strengthening the livelihoods of local people.

Furthermore, to promote sustainable management of natural resources, the project offered communities various training processes that will enable them to responsibly manage land, water and forests to protect the environment and become more resilient in coping with climate change.

In order to improve access to water and veterinary services in the departments, in addition to the rehabilitation of the Messeytaleb dam, the project plans to build 24 other infrastructures in the region, including dams, wells, livestock vaccination pens, etc.

PRODEVELOP's approach is also based on a strong community participation component, and community training in conflict prevention. PRODEVELOP is an example of a sustainable development project that contributes to improving the living conditions of local people in the Sahel through sustainable development of the region.
