We involve migrants' associations in Italy by implementing projects that focus on development dynamics in their countries of origin. We also inform beneficiaries of the risks related to irregular migration and we carry out economic development projects to counter the causes leading migrants to leave their country.
In 2002, COOPI started implementing two types of intervention related to the migration sector – co-development projects, on the one hand, and initiatives supporting returnees in their countries of origin, on the other. "Co-development projects" aim to enhance the migrant status to that of “development agent” for his or her own country, while projects "supporting returnees " aim to promote returnees’ reintegration into the labour market and into society within their country of origin or in third countries.
With regards to the migration sector, in the last 5 years, COOPI has paid special attention to mental health and psycho-social assistance to migrants, who have survived torture and abuse along the migration route, to vocational and business development training of young people living in countries with high migration rates and to community awareness raising campaigns to warn against the dangers of irregular migration.
