Venezuela. "Immersive" theater against human trafficking in Caracas

At the "Petra Barreto" women's shelter in Caracas, COOPI – Cooperazione Internazionale together, with local partner Tinta Violeta, organized an important awareness-raising activity as part of the “16 days of activism against gender-based violence” - which began on November 25, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and ended on December 10, Human Rights Day. With the presence of international and local partners from the Consortium for Humanitarian Aid in Venezuela (CONAHVE) and from the European Union Humanitarian Aid (ECHO), as COOPI's project funder, the day featured the theatrical performance "La Carnada" or "The Bait", an original creation by Centro TET.

Through real-life testimonies and data, and with technical assistance and sponsorship from IOM and UNHCR, the play reconstructs the human trafficking drama in an original and groundbreaking way, to raise awareness of gender-based violence. The presence of "La Carnada" in the "Petra Barreto" women's home not only enriched the awareness day, which ended with a pedagogical forum to discuss what was seen in the play, but also provided an emotional and effective “platform” to address these critical issues, because it connected with the audience in a deep and personal way, “immersive”.

This event reaffirms the power of narratives to raise awareness and prevent social problems, marking a significant step toward a safer and more equitable future in Venezuela.

The safety and protection of vulnerable people, such as victims of sexual and gender-based violence and victims of trafficking, are the priorities of the ECHO-funded project implemened by COOPI “Multisectoral humanitarian assistance to address the urgent needs of the most vulnerable people in Venezuela", which started in June 2022 and ends in May 2024. Due to its multisectoral nature, the project also works on improving access to health and sexual and reproductive health services, as well as on water and quality food.
