Lebanon: lessons on ecology

On the 27th and the 28th of March, a total of 100 children from 3 schools in Northern Lebanon participated in an activity devoted toplanting around 40 trees, within the framework of a program called "ScEGLi (Schools and Education in Jordan and Lebanon)", funded by AICS (Italian Agency for Development Cooperation). The tree planting was carried out in Tripoli , at the schools of "Dawhet al adab" and "AL Oula for boys", and in Koura, at "Khalil Salem School": 30 trees were planted in the schools’ playgrounds and about 10 trees were planted in a park in Bterram. The aim of the activity was not only to highlight the relevance of trees and the need to protect nature, but also to make children actively involved in protecting their schools from pollution.

The participants were as follows:

  • Bterram School: Grades 5 and 6: 29 children – boys and girls (11-15 years old)
  • Dawhat al Adab School: Grade 5: 36 girls (11-13 years old)
  • Al Oula for Boys School: Grades 4 and 5: 35 boys (12-15 years old)

The park in Bterram was chosen also so as to restore the public playground with the aim to make it more child-friendly, encouraging the citizenship in their schools and communities. The activity was carried out with the support and coordination of the headmasters, MEHE (the Ministry) and the municipalities of Tripoli and Bterram.
