13th edition of the ACA Annual Cashew Conference
From 7th to 9th November, COOPI participated in the Annual Cashew Conference in Tanzania, organised by the African Cashew Alliance (ACA) in Dar es Salam. The 13th edition of the conference has become the largest annual cashew event in Africa with over 350 participants from all over the world every year.
This year's conference was themed "Fostering Synergies, Influencing Market Dynamics" and aimed to: create a unique platform for cashew industry stakeholders from around the world, share experiences and best practices, deliberate on the future of the industry and technology innovations.
Monoarul Islam, COOPI Project Leader in Sierra Leone, illustrated the results achieved thanks to the ProAact project and the potential of the cashew sector in the country, showing the techniques of processing and transformation, the diversification of by-products and initiatives for the development of youth entrepreneurship.
The ProAct project "Fostering Smallholder Agriculture in Sierra Leone", funded by the European Union and implemented in consortium with Welt Hunger Hilfe (WHH) and Interaid, aims to reduce food insecurity and increase the income of farming families, thanks to the cultivation of cashews.
During the project, which will end in October 2020, COOPI will contribute to the growth of the cashew sector in Sierra Leone, opening a first outlet to the international market, by distributing seeds of high production value, training farmers on crop management and creating a network between producers and traders.
