Ecuador. Agreement between COOPI and the University of Guayaquil for psychological assistance to migrants
COOPI – Cooperazione Internazionale Ecuador and the University of Guayaquil signed an agreement that will allow Psychology students to provide specialized care to migrants. In addition to direct assistance, the partnership will promote joint research on the Ulysses Syndrome, an emotional disorder affecting individuals who endure prolonged and complex migration processes.
During the ceremony, representatives from both institutions emphasized the importance of integrating academic knowledge with humanitarian efforts to enhance the well-being of the migrant population. This collaboration will not only provide psychological support but also generate studies and publications to design more effective mental health interventions.
Ulysses Syndrome, also known as "chronic and multiple stress of the immigrant," reflects the emotional toll of uncertainty, loneliness, and challenges faced by many people on their journey to a new life. Through this agreement, the goal is not only to offer emotional support but also to expand knowledge about this condition to improve care for this vulnerable population.
This alliance marks a milestone in the collaboration between academia and the humanitarian sector, reaffirming the commitment of COOPI and the University of Guayaquil to the integration and professional support of those seeking new opportunities in Ecuador.
COOPI has been working in Ecuador since 1967, implementing development projects to combat poverty and respond to emergencies, adhering to the principles of human rights, gender equity, interculturality, and governance. Its projects have addressed areas such as child protection, water, sanitation, and hygiene, infrastructure improvement, livelihood generation and socioeconomic inclusion, governance and human rights, and sociocultural integration.
