Ecuador. COOPI and AVSI promote entrepreneurship for the economic and social integration of people in human mobility

As part of the project “Integrados - Integration of Venezuelan Migrants and Refugees in Ecuador Phase 2: Ongoing support to provide protection services, job opportunities and access to decent living conditions to Venezuelan refugees and migrants”, funded by the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (BPRM), started in September and with 1-year duration, AVSI and COOPI maintain the entrepreneurship program for people in human mobility and host families, with the aim of improving their financial situation and promoting their economic and social integration in Ecuador.

The Entrepreneurship Program provides participants with the necessary tools to start and manage their own businesses. Isabel Valarezo, a COOPI technician in Pichincha, explained that the program covers a wide range of topics and is divided into two training phases, combining in-person and virtual classes so that entrepreneurs can participate without neglecting their businesses or family responsibilities:

  • The first stage focuses on recognizing entrepreneurial skills and helping participants identify themselves as such. Additionally, they conduct a SWOT analysis to break down their strengths and weaknesses on a personal and professional level;
  • In the second stage, participants, with the support of the technicians, work with the Business Model CANVA methodology to develop ideas that strengthen their businesses.

Additionally, participants receive classes on various topics, from basic concepts of mathematics and human rights to the development of business plans and marketing strategies.

The program has brought together participants from various provinces of Ecuador, such as El Oro, Guayas, Manabí, and Pichincha, both of Venezuelan and Ecuadorian origin, highlighting its inclusive impact. In total, 40 people will graduate from the current cycle at the national level, representing a significant step towards strengthening business capabilities and improving the quality of life of the participants and their families.

COOPI has been working in Ecuador since 1967, implementing development projects to help fight poverty and respond to emergencies, while respecting the principles of human rights, gender, interculturalism, and governance. COOPI projects in Ecuador have addressed areas like housing, shelter, water and sanitation, socio-economic inclusion, including the response to the Covid-19 pandemic emergency, as well as support for small artisanal enterprises.
