From Haiti, a call to fund community resilience ahead of International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction

This year, the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, observed annually on October 13, is themed: "Invest in resilience, not in disasters".

In line with this theme, COOPI – Cooperazione Internazionale in Haiti is implementing a disaster preparedness project in close collaboration with the Departmental Civil Protection of Artibonite, its partners (the National Association of Scouts of Haiti and AGERCA), and local institutions such as municipalities.

The project focuses on strengthening Local Civil Protection Committees (CLPCs), which operate in the various sections of each commune, to ensure that risk management is as locally driven as possible.

To date, 15 Local Civil Protection Committees have been reactivated and are currently being strengthened through the project, which is funded by ECHO.

As part of the celebrations for this International Day, the 15 CLPCs are invited to creatively present themselves and highlight their role in their communities, in the presence of local authorities.

AGERCA, our partner, has secured prizes from businesses in the city of Gonaïves for the five best-performing CLPCs. COOPI will offer consolation prizes to the other CLPCs who participated but were not among those awarded during the presentations.

The event will take place on October 13, 2015, at the headquarters of the Departmental Civil Protection of Artibonite.

COOPI has been present in Haiti since 2010 and has implemented numerous projects for disaster risk reduction, response to cholera and drought, management of camps for displaced persons, rehabilitation of housing and food security, in order to reduce vulnerability and strengthen the resilience of Haitian communities.
