Malawi: installing basins for aquaculture
Among the activities carried out in Malawi within the project financed by AICS (the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation), COOPI is also in the process of installing basins for aquaculture.
Being one of the main sources of animal protein, lake fish is an integral part of the local diet. Due to overfishing and the distance from the lake itself, however, some communities are unable to obtain sufficient supplies.
To solve the problem, artificial water ponds were created in these areas at the end of May through the Cash for Work programme. After the rains ended and the water levels stabilized, talapia fingerlings were purchased from the National Aquaculture Center (NAC), brought in new ponds with the help and supervision of the technicians of the Center and finally distributed.
At dawn some members of the communities jumped in the cold water to facilitate their release.
