Malawi. Prevention at the centre of COOPI's projects
Natural hazards and the COVID-19 pandemic are the two emergency fronts on which COOPI – Cooperazione Internazionale is working in Malawi, through two projects funded by the Directorate-General for Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations of the European Union (ECHO). In both cases, COOPI works alongside local institutions to prevent risks raising awareness among the local population and providing technical and specialist support to existing structures.
The project "Strengthening disaster resilience in urban and rural Malawi" aims to improve the technologies already used to predict floods in order to reduce their impact. In fact, early preparedness of communities and schools for imminent disasters minimises the damage caused by such events.
In the case of the second project - "Supporting the district and communities at risk in Malawi to prevent, quickly identify and respond effectively to COVID-19" - prevention is achieved by strengthening local health facilities. COOPI supports health institutions and prepares them to better respond in emergency situations such as the current one. In addition, COOPI is committed to making WASH services available and efficient within the various communities. This makes it possible to slow down the spread of contagion and prevent morbidity and mortality among the population.
In the following photo gallery, the activities implemented by COOPI aimed both at raising awareness among the civil population and at training the forces involved.
