Malawi: solar-powered pumps to foster agriculture
In Malawi, solar technology is slowly gaining ground. Within the project funded by AICS (the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation), COOPI is providing solar water pumping systems with the purpose of facilitating farmers' life and work.
The pumps allow to irrigate a larger surface without having to transport water with buckets and watering cans. They also allow to push it against a slope , making areas that were previously unusable now cultivable . This is extremely important in a country with a steadily growing population and a reduced amount of agricultural land.
Beneficiaries were trained by COOPI technicians on how to assemble and disassemble the pumps and on how to manage their ordinary maintenance, so as to make them completely indipendent in managing these systems once the project is completed.
The reception of the pumps (32 in total) was warm. After one month, the benefits provided to agriculture look very promising.
