We foster sustainable solutions to reduce disaster risks and build community resilience.
At COOPI, we work hand-in-hand with communities to strengthen their capacity to prevent, prepare for, and respond to disasters. Our approach bridges emergency response, recovery, and long-term development, aiming to reduce risks from natural hazards like floods, droughts, earthquakes, and more, by integrating Disaster Preparedness and Disaster Risk Reduction into everyday life.
At the heart of our work is a comprehensive understanding of risks and vulnerabilities. We combine geographic information systems (GIS), territorial assessments, and risk analysis to help communities anticipate and prepare for disasters. By strengthening capacities at every level, we ensure our interventions are both proactive and reactive, empowering people to reduce risks before disasters hit.
COOPI views DP/DRR as both a primary sector of intervention-delivered through standalone, multisectoral, or integrated initiatives and a key approach to be mainstreamed across its broader programming. Prevention, mitigation, and preparedness strategies are embedded throughout all phases of the project cycle, safeguarding communities, individuals, assets, and social structures.
We empower local communities through training, knowledge-sharing, and the development of tailored risk-reducing plans. Our activities include the creation of early warning systems, the improvement of local infrastructure like evacuation routes and shelters, and the reinforcement of coordination mechanisms between local authorities and community leaders.
Our approach also emphasizes sustainable development and climate adaptation. We promote the responsible use of natural resources and climate-smart solutions to protect livelihoods and enhance long-term resilience. By fostering inclusive processes, we ensure that vulnerable groups - such as women, children, and people with disabilities - are central to disaster risk planning.
Through a combination of capacity-building, infrastructure development, and policy support, we help communities and local authorities strengthen disaster preparedness and create sustainable solutions. By mainstreaming DP/DRR strategies across all programming, we aim to build the foundation for lasting resilience.
