Syria. Seed distribution to secure food during COVID19 times

The pandemic emergency affected the most vulnerable families living in Eastern Ghouta. COVID19 is posing a further threat in addition to the many pre-existing difficulties already touching the area. Even if the in the last months field movements are not possible due to mitigate measures in place to prevent spread of decease, COOPI is constantly in touch with the beneficiaries providing them continuous support remotely. Within the project "Reducing vulnerability and increasing resilience for the most vulnerable Households in Eastern Ghouta and Dara”, funded by the Italian Cooperation (AICS), COOPI support has been valuable to all beneficiaries.

Seed distribution

Due to the health emergency, the fragile market collapsed. Nevertheless, thanks to the seeds previously received by COOPI, families were able to produce their own vegetables and secure part of their food supply during the holy month of Ramadan. “Agricultural production is the only activity I can do now. I can produce food staying close to my house and being safe” says one of the beneficiaries. Families managed to preserve some seeds from the previous harvest, and they planted them to produce more food.

In the previous months, COOPI provided the most vulnerable families with 1,440 sets of seeds and agricultural tools. Moreover, COOPI agronomist addressed beneficiaries with training and technical advice.

After more than 9 years of crisis, families in Syria need to move forward and rebuild their lives. COOPI is helping the most vulnerable families with the needed assistance to promote their dignity and their resilience” explains Matteo Crosetti, COOPI Regional Coordinator for the Middle East. Thus, the project is designed to support families in their need of food, reduce negative coping strategies and build resilience for the future.

COOPI will continue to support families in need to overcome the challenges they have to face. In the next months, COOPI will provide poultry kits (including chicken and roster) for 540 families living in Dara, southern Governorate of Syria.
