The repair and expansion of the irrigation system in Lifuwu
The sound of diggers, bulldozers, welding torches, power generators, sandblasters and the strong smell of paint are filling the air during the construction of new infrastructure as part of work to repair and extend the irrigation system in Lifuwu, Malawi.
Funded by the European Union and implemented by COOPI and Agricane, the project will lead to the sustainable conversion and proper functioning of the system with its repair, extension, the supply of equipment and the training of Lifuwu cooperatives. The aim is to create a 100% efficient system that can act as an agribusiness catalyst in Salima and that could subsequently become the country’s main player organising the export of farm products.
Officials from the European Union and Malawi’s Ministry of Agriculture visited the construction site and during that visit, the Ministry’s Vice Director of Irrigation Services, Geoffrey Mamba, commented: ‘We are delighted with the work that is being done and we hope that all the project’s aims will be achieved.’
