DRC. In Goma to talk about one of the world's most serious crises
For years, the territory around Goma in North Kivu (Democratic Republic of Congo) has been hit by attacks from the M23 rebel group. Hundreds of thousands of people, including many children, have fled their homes and villages in search of safety and are now living in extremely precarious situations in improvised settlements, lacking essential services such as drinking water, hygiene and food, on the outskirts of the city.
In order to improve the living conditions of more than 2000 children, guaranteeing them access to nutritious food and educational opportunities, COOPI - Cooperazione Internazionale, together with its local partner Expertise Humanitaire et Sociale (EHA), is conducting the project ‘Emergency multi-sectoral assistance in the areas of nutrition and education for communities affected by the M23 crisis in North Kivu province’, thanks to funding from OCHA (United Nations Humanitarian Affairs Office).
The weekly newspaper Famiglia Cristiana is reporting on this in these days, through its correspondent, Giulia Cerqueti. Accompanied by COOPI staff in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Italian journalist is documenting the complex humanitarian situation and how COOPI, present in the country since 1977, faces one of the most serious and forgotten crises of our time on a daily basis, working alongside local associations:

Since 1977, COOPI has been active in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where it has acquired a profound knowledge of the local context, focusing on activities to protect, prevent and combat malnutrition, as well as promoting food security. The organisation has always paid special attention to women and children who are victims of gender-based violence, forced recruitment and other serious human rights violations, offering psycho-social support, free healthcare and promoting protection and prevention projects. Furthermore, COOPI is committed to facilitating educational and professional reintegration, helping these children and families to rebuild their lives and autonomy.
