Djugu, DRC. Safe and inclusive education for 3,200 children

3,200 children in the territory of Djugu, in the northeastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, will benefit from the United Nations Common Humanitarian Fund funded-project that COOPI has been implementing since May 2019.

The initiative aims to support the population affected by the clashes between local communities and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo, through a multi-sectoral approach ranging from education, to protection and food security.

To affirm the right to education, even in emergency contexts, COOPI has organized several campaigns to raise awareness among the population on important issues, such as the schooling of girls, peace education, mechanisms for reporting and monitoring cases of violation of children's rights, including sexual and gender-based violence, and the importance of being supported by psychosocial services, especially for vulnerable boys and girls.

Subsequently, since November 2019, COOPI has trained 64 teachers, 9 headmasters, 42 representatives of parents' committees, 42 school brigades and pedagogical coordinators, including 32 women, and helped redefining codes of conduct and school regulations.

Finally, it distributed 2,146 school kits, of which 1,180 to girls, giving 3,200 students access to safe, inclusive and quality education.

With the project entitled “Multisectoral assistance for strengthening community resilience and social cohesion (protection) for the benefit of populations affected by the crisis in the Fataki-Rethy-Linga-Jiba Triangle, Djugu territory (ADRA-COOPI-PPSSP Consortium)", financed by the Common Humanitarian Fund, COOPI offers assistance to communities affected by repeated clashes between local communities and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo, while strengthening community resilience and social cohesion and supporting displaced and host communities to receive adequate humanitarian assistance.
