Guatemala: Strengthening Climate Resilience and Food Security in the Mancomunidades

The project “Addressing climate change and food and nutritional security in the mancomunado territories of Guatemala”, implemented by COOPI – Cooperazione Internazionale, CISP and Paz y Desarrollo with the support of the European Union and in coordination with MANORQ and MANCOSEQ, concluded on 6 November 2025 with the presentation of its main results in Santa Cruz del Quiché.

Among the most significant results are: the development of Territorial Strategic Plans with a DRET approach and micro-watershed management plans; the establishment and strengthening of 7 COMREDs; the training of 78 people in the use of drones, photogrammetry and COPERNICUS; and the donation of specialized drones.

In the areas of gender and food security, more than 100 leaders were trained on positive masculinities and gender approaches. Regarding access to water and FNS, 964 families obtained safe drinking water through filters; water harvesting and storage systems were implemented; and 245 agroecological household gardens were established.

In terms of economic empowerment, 385 people participated in entrepreneurship workshops, and productive initiatives involving oyster mushrooms, tilapia and poultry were promoted.

In the environmental sector, over 126 hectares were managed through forest management plans, 7 municipal nurseries were strengthened, and 42.75 hectares were reforested through community workdays.

The project expresses its gratitude for the collaboration of the Mancomunities, Municipalities and partners such as CONRED, MAGA, SESAN, INAB, FUNDEBASE, Water For People and MARN, emphasizing that these results demonstrate the impact of territorial planning, technology and joint action in building more resilient and sustainable territories.
