Malawi: visiting the project
From 28 June to 1 July, a technician from the AICS headquarters in Maputo visited our project "Building resilience: supporting vulnerable populations to reduce the negative effects of El Nino in the districts of Salima and Mangochi, Malawi".
During his stay he had the opportunity to visit numerous communities and groups that participated in the various activities carried out by the project. In particular, he was in some of the schools that received fruit trees to improve the vitamin intake of the children. He met with groups of women who were taught how to grow vegetables for their families in order to obtain a source of income independently.
He also spoke with the members of the irrigation schemes rehabilitated thanks to the project: they are trying to deal with the umpteenth emergency constituted by the fall armyworm, a butterfly caterpillar recently arrived in the African continent that is destroying the cultivation of corn.
The project, funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), has been modified during the course of work to try to support as much as possible the population affected by the negative effects caused by El Nino. COOPI's engagement in the area will continue and further activities will be carried out in the next project due to start in September.
