COOPI contributes to enhance its collaboration with Haitian Civil Protection to assist vulnerable communities in Port-au-Prince dealing with 2019 hurricane season.

The project is an extension of COOPI strategy in the Haitian capital, started in 2010, and aimed at enhancing vulnerable population preparedness, local actors emergency reaction capacities and preventive territorial management to natural disasters in Port-au-Prince.

Our project takes place in neighbours of Tabarre, Croix des Bouquets and Cité Soleil; it is funded by OFDA - U.S. Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance - and it is in partnership with the Haitian Civil Protection.

The project aims at mitigating the population exposure to risks, by addressing difficulties in mobility, lack of knowledge and capacities of communities, public and private local actors on how to mitigate and respond to a natural disaster and poor waste management. A new crucial approach will also be adopted to include gender principles and children rights.

Our project continues the previous OFDA action started in 2017 and make the most of the lessons learnt and best practices acquired following other projects carried out by COOPI in the Disaster Risk Reduction field since 2010. It also fits into the wider strategic USAID/OFDA framework for the LAC - Latin America and Caribbean region.
