International Day of Persons with Disabilities: Ela's story

Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future is the theme of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, celebrated on December 3rd. On this occasion COOPI – Cooperazione Internazionale in Jordan launches a campaign to promote inclusive language in Jordan and reiterates its commitment to improving the economic empowerment and social inclusion of vulnerable groups through the story of Ela*, a beneficiary of the project "B-LIEVE: Increasing Subsistence Income and Empowerment for the Elimination of Vulnerability in Jordan".

Implemented by COOPI in collaboration with Education for Employment in Europe and Education for Employment in Jordan, and funded by the European Union, it highlights the tangible difference being made on the lives of people with disabilities. Ela, affected by polio, a disease that affects the nervous system and prevents her from effectively using the right side of her body, has received the tools needed to enhance her resilience and participation in social and economic life.

Before participating in a psychological support group, she faced social pressures that influenced her mood, making her more vulnerable to her surroundings. Speaking about her condition, she mentioned how simple tasks, such as activating a banking app at a branch, caused frustration due to transportation difficulties and the inefficiency of the device.

Participating in 8 PSS sessions allowed her not only to understand the concept of stress and how to manage daily pressures but also to overcome the negative thoughts surrounding her life. Today, Ela has successfully activated the banking app she wanted, despite initial difficulties and uncooperative staff. Thanks to the support of specialists and the interaction with others, she was able to express her difficulties without being overwhelmed by frustration, managing her emotions and solving the problem.

During the final session, Ela thanked the organization for giving her the opportunity to participate in these psychological support sessions, stating that she can now express her feelings assertively without harming herself or others. She also mentioned that her stress levels have become more balanced.

The B-LIEVE project aligns with Jordan’s progressive legal framework ensuring dignity and equal opportunities for disabled individuals. COOPI’s intervention in Jordan within this project is part of its long-standing programs to protect vulnerable groups, in line with its policies and values. This is achieved through multisectoral interventions, with a focus on the individual, providing the tools needed to improve their life and recognize their rights.
