Since 2014, the department of Huehuetenango has been severely affected by climate change, mainly by the El Niño phenomenon, which has caused long periods of drought and significant crop losses.

COOPI is present in Huehuetenango to meet the urgent needs of the population most affected by this food and nutrition emergency.

The project aims to strengthen the management capacities of two municipalities in the region to draft public policies that improve the quality of life and, in particular, the food and nutrition security of the population. COOPI is therefore contributing to implement action plans on food and nutrition security at municipal level, to strengthen competencies and transparency of municipal authorities, and to encourage the participation of citizens, especially women and young people, for a sustainable and equitable management of the project.
